Tiffany setting as the name gives it away, was originally discovered by Tiffany & Co. back in 1886. It was originally differentiated with the Cathedral setting with 6 prongs holding the round brilliant stone above the band. Whereas, a Cathedral setting – the original of its time, is defined by the shoulders or arches that frame the stone tapering into the band.
Cathedral setting goes way back in time and numerous celebrities like Paris Hilton are seen flaunting this setting and the overall look. This setting is considerably easier to work with as oppose to the Tiffany Set. It allows large carats of stones to be easily set as it holds it together better on the ring. It connotes a very traditional and gracious look.
Looking at a more elegant and a minimalistic demeanor, A Tiffany cut parades a stone lifted much above the ring into the light to allow maximum brilliance to radiate from the stone. Some of our favorite celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn and Beyoncé have drawn attentions with their Tiffany set rings.
Summary of which setting to choose:
1) Cathedral is more sturdy to hold big carat stones
2) Tiffany setting allows more radiance of the stone
3) Cathedral set rings are more difficult to clean and maintain
4) Tiffany set rings are more expensive
5) Tiffany set rings are timeless
My personal favorite is the Tiffany Cut, as it makes the center diamond the piece of attraction. A tiffany set ring on a micro pavé band wins my heart. MAUNI LONDON, has modified the Tiffany cut into using fewer prongs to hold the stone allowing more diamonds than metal and allowing even more light making your diamond be the showstopper.
